Odaiba RX-78: Japan’s Answer to North Korean Nukes

Moe Passion’s coverage of the construction of a giant 1:1 scale model of Amuro Ray’s RX-78-2 reached its apex with the statue’s completion on 9th June 2009.
The statue stands over eighteen metres tall and is built on Odaiba’s Shiokaze Park. The base is hidden in the statue’s feet, with giant steel pipes similar to those used in skyscrapers anchoring the model robot to the ground.
Meanwhile, the body is constructed of prefabricated sections of fibreglass-reinforced plastic, painted and decal-ed to resemble the actual robot.
The model will also have fifty light fixtures and fourteen mist jets to simulate the internal hydraulics of the real Gundam. The pièce de résistance however is the head unit, which is mounted on motors and can tilt from side to side.
Speculation is rife among some Filipino Gundam fans that the statue is not really a statue, but an actual working super robot hiding in plain sight. They further hypothesize that it is just the first in an army of Gundams being constructed by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces against the threat of nuclear warfare with North Korea >:D

I went back to Moe Passion’s article and read some of the comments. I LOLed at Timothy2035′s comment (posted June 9, 2009 at 9:05 pm) – specially about living in and calling it Macross Town! I can’t help but think they will built an SDF Macross 1:1 scale someday though and I’d gladly volunteer to be in it!:D
